Third Idea

After trying out the first two ideas and not being happy with the results I’ve come up with, I’ve been looking at ways to combine an experimental diary/documentation within a highly visual, painterly style. Based on the paintings of artists like Adolf Wolfli and August Walla, I will be painting a map of everything that happened over the space of a day, with writings based on the diaries of Robert Shields, who documented his entire life at five minute intervals.

Turning the events of the day into a map is a way for me to try and find out what connects all the different parts of the day together – things happening in order, and also connected by similarity (eating, talking to people etc).

The idea for the work was initially taken from the Wandering Rocks section of Ulysses, which takes the reader across the lives of several characters around the streets of Dublin, culminating in a parade through the streets which ties all these characters and places together.
